There is so much more in the Niagara area, than just the falls, although they are the main attraction. People come from all over the world to tour the falls.
The Canadian side is the place to stay and has almost all of the attractions and is home to the great Falls View hotels. I think the Embassy Suites and Niagara Casino have the best vantage point, but the Marriott is good too. The Fallsview hotels also give you birds eye views of the magnificent fireworks show that happens every night at 10pm, just in front of the U.S. Falls and Niagara casino. It's a great way to end the day! HERE is a video of the firework show.
The falls are illuminated at night, and the colors change. At one point the Canadian falls are lit in red and white to represent Canada; the U.S. Falls are lit in red, white and blue to represent the U.S.
I highly recommend a tour that tells you all about those that have defied death or been sent to their death over the falls. Stuntman stories keep the tour moving. And historic and heroic tales as well. The tour takes you right up to the falls - both on land, in caves behind the falls, and on the water. You can feel the mist. The boats you see at the falls with the blue coats are from the U.S. side, on the Maid of the Mist. The red coats are from the Canadian side. You can also opt to take the gondola back and forth between the U.S. and Canadian side, over the dangerous and intriguing "vortex."(see video)
The local WeGo Bus pass is a must and is the most efficient and cost effective mode of transportation throughout the Canadian side of Niagara. It's like a hop-on hope-off city tour.
Dining is also a main attraction in the area, so bring your appetite and prepare for some delicious and entertaining meals. Our favorite place to eat was Kelsey's. It's in the heart of the entertainment district, had excellent food and a terrific one man band day and night, that we enjoyed.
There is an entertainment district adjacent to the falls, with a Midway full of carnival games and rides, shops, restaurants, wax and Ripley's museums.
You need only two to three days to do and see it all, to make it worth the visit.
